Student Advisors: Lesley M. Bowick Constance Barnes JoAn R. Clyde | STUDENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LADDER
By establishing a “ladder” by which students can move progressively towards Professional membership, your chapter can become known as “THE” way towards a successful career in the field. This is an example of such a ladder: IAAP PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP á STUDENT IAAP MEMBERSHIP á STUDENT CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP á YOUR CHAPTER’S RELATIONSHIP WITH STUDENTS AND TEACHERS
The bottom rung on the ladder is the most important one -- without it, students cannot get to the top of the ladder, resulting in no new IAAP members from among the newest members of the profession. If there is no IAAP Student Chapter in your area, the logical idea is to try to establish one...but it might not be the right idea. What? Remember the bottom rung; without establishing a solid relationship with students and teachers, your efforts to establish a Student Chapter will fall short of your expectations. Establishing a Student Chapter requires not just a time commitment, but an emotional commitment from all involved. Therefore, if your chapter does not have a relationship with any of the local schools or colleges, then developing such a relationship must be your first goal.
